Starbucks Coffee Company and SSP to expand Starbucks presence into Norway

SSP News Release 16-June-2011

Oslo, Norway; June 16, 2011 – Starbucks Coffee Company (NASDAQ: SBUX), and  SSP, the leading operator of food and beverage brands in travel locations worldwide, today announced it will expand Starbucks presence into Norway opening the first Starbucks store at Oslo Airport early 2012.

“We are very excited to bring the unique Starbucks Experience to customers in Norway,” said Rich Nelsen, president, Starbucks Europe, Middle East and Africa.  “Norway has one of the highest per capita consumption of coffee in the world, which presents a great opportunity for Starbucks. We look forward to meeting our new customers and becoming part of the local community,” added Nelsen.

This agreement supports Starbucks desire to increase its international store growth with licensed partners who have proven experience and demonstrated success.  Starbucks and SSP entered into a strategic partnership in June, 2008 and have since opened 29 stores in the UK, Spain, France, Germany, Switzerland and Sweden.  It further supports Starbucks strategy of opening stores in prime international travel channels and diversifying its distribution channel for continued expansion and profitable growth.

“One of SSP’s strengths is our broad and diverse portfolio of leading international, national and local brands, coupled with our ability to bring leading high-street and local concepts to the travel environment,” said Morten Solberg Nilsen, Managing Director of SSP Norway. “We’re delighted to be building on our successful operation of Starbucks coffeehouses across Europe, and playing a role in establishing the brand in Norway. We’re confident that Starbucks will be the ideal complement to the suite of restaurants we will be operating at Oslo Airport.”

Oslo Airport (OSL) hosts more than 20 million passengers a year. There is further expansion in progress at Oslo Airport to construct Terminal 2. The work will start in 2011 and will be completed in 2017. OSL will then have a capacity of 28 million passengers annually

Starbucks® Iced Latte

This announcement comes on the heels of a very successful launch of Starbucks® Iced Latte ready-to-drink coffee line-up in grocery and convenience stores last January, where it has achieved 37 percent value share for ready-to-drink products in Norway in a few short months, according to a recent Nielsen survey.

“We are humbled by the overwhelmingly positive reception Starbucks® Iced Latte coffee drinks have received from our customers in Norway, and it is a natural next step for us to open our first retail store after receiving such a warm welcome,” said Nelsen.

All espresso based beverages served at Starbucks stores and Starbucks® Iced Lattes in Norway and throughout Europe are made from 100 percent Fairtrade certified espresso. Working together, Starbucks and Fairtrade are empowering customers to make responsible, ethical decisions about the coffee they drink so they can support the farmers that produce it to earn a sustainable living. Starbucks is one of the largest purchasers of Fairtrade certified coffee in the world.
