SSP announces significant contract win at Xi'an Xianyang International Airport

SSP News Release 12-December-2011

SSP has secured a major contract to operate five outlets at Xi’an Xianyang International Airport’s new Terminal 3 when it opens in March 2012.

Landside in the departure area, there will be a Le Grand Comptoir. Well located next to the check-in counters and featuring a spacious outdoor terrace, the brasserie-style outlet will serve a range of French and international classic dishes, including French onion soup, quiche Lorraine and a range of continental pastries and deserts.

One of the largest outlets at the terminal will be the 338 square meter Burger King, which will be located in the airside departure area. This will be complemented by a Costa Coffee – the only coffee shop in this part of the terminal. There will also be a sushi concept called Sushi Express. Specifically created by SSP for the airport, Sushi Express will serve a range of dishes freshly prepared by professional sushi chefs. Customers will have the option to select from a ‘kaiten’ conveyor belt or enjoy a full meal in the dining section, while those with less time to spare will be able to take-away in specially designed bento boxes. Although sushi is at the heart of the brand, Sushi Express will also offer a variety of Japanese inspired foods, including soups, rices, noodles, and classics such as Pork Chop Curry.

Landside in arrivals, SSP will be bringing the time-honoured charm of the authentic tea house to the terminal. Taiji Tea House was founded in 1765, and is now the largest tea house chain, with over 560 outlets. Qing dynasty design and the performance of the traditional tea ceremony will provide travellers and airport visitors with an opportunity to experience an authentic Chinese cultural tradition. On the menu at Taiji Tea house are some of the most famous teas in China including Dragon Well tea from Hangzhou, Iron Goddess from Fujian and the fabled Big Red Robe from Fujian.

Commenting on the win, Daren Lau, managing director of SSP Asia said; ‘China, as a fast growing market, has been identified by SSP as a region of key strategic importance and therefore this tender award is a major milestone for SSP. Securing this contract in one of the fastest developing regions of the country marks us as leaders within the Chinese market, and sets us apart from our global competitors. We have proved once again that we can offer a competitive package that incorporates the very best of locally inspired brands as well as leading international names. We are very proud to have been selected not only because of the commercial strength of our proposal, but because of the excellent brands we offered, alongside our strong operational capabilities and proven ability to deliver the highest customer experience. We look forward to a long and successful partnership with our clients Xi’an Xianyang International Airport Co., Ltd. and its shareholders China West Airport Group and Fraport.’

‘SSP will lift our food and beverage offerings to a world-class level by adding a perfect mix of local, regional as well as international brands’, said Wolfgang Weil, COO of Xi’an Xianyang International Airport Co., Ltd. ‘The company offered custom-tailored, superior concepts. We are very glad to have SSP onboard at our new Terminal 3.’

Xi’an is China’s first imperial city and capital of the Shaanxi Province. As the home of the world famous terracotta soldiers, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in China. Last year, the airport welcomed 18 million travellers, and this figure surpassed 20 million last week (8th December). The new third terminal has been designed to handle 22 million passengers.
