Our work on the environment

We take caring for the environment seriously. Our environmental policy aims to integrate environmental considerations into all our business operations. Our aim is to work continuously to improve the environment.

SSP Sweden began to work actively with environmental issues in the mid-1990s, including important “behind the scenes” areas that perhaps are not as evident to our customers but which are nevertheless important for the environment.

We attained ISO 14001 certification in 2001. This means that we work actively with our staff, suppliers and other partners in concerted environmental efforts.

We also decided to use only organic milk and organic filter coffee in our range.

Throughout this decade, we have set strict environmental targets for purchasing, chemical products, energy consumption, waste management and overall resource management, targets we have met or even exceeded.

In 2008 we won Arla Foods’ Golden Cow Award for “Best Environmental Efforts” – important acknowledgment that we are on the right track.

“One objective for 2009 is to use 100 per cent eco-certified cleaning agents and we are set to achieve this,” says Björn Lindström, SSP’s Environment Coordinator.

SSP is also working with composting, continuing energy savings and lowering carbon-dioxide emissions by reducing the number of deliveries.

Other measures include:

- Purchasing goods and services with the least environmental impact.

- Using a biofuel vehicle for internal transportation at Stockholm Arlanda Airport.

- Fifty percent of electricity consumed comes from eco-certified sources.

- Using eco-certified cleaning agents.

- Ensuring that cleaning agents and chemicals are used in correct concentrations.

- Sorting organic waste. Half of our units are now doing so.

- Implementing strict food-hygiene procedures.

- Phasing out use of WWF-listed endangered fish species.

- Using measures such as e-learning to get staff to think environmentally at an early stage.

- SSP is a member of the Swedish Association of Environmental Managers and the Swedish Association for Water.
