SSP to open Norway’s first YO! Sushi at Oslo Airport

SSP News Release 7-November-2011

Leading sushi brand YO! Sushi will make its first appearance at an airport outside the UK and its debut in the Norwegian market when it opens at Oslo in January next year.  The brand will be one of 30 outlets which SSP will operate from November this year as part of a major redevelopment of the airport.

Known as ‘the UK’s favourite Japanese restaurant’ YO! Sushi was at the forefront of the sushi revolution when it introduced the concept of the ‘kaiten’ sushi bar to London in 1997. Today, YO! Sushi continues to provide fun, fast and fresh Japanese food served within a cutting edge restaurant design. Catering for different types of taste buds, at YO! Sushi, customers can choose from an extensive menu selection of sushi rolls, sashimi, Asian-inspired salads along with a variety of classic hot Japanese dishes including firecracker rice, yakisoba noodles, salmon teriyaki or katsu curry. All are served on colour-coded dishes from a sleek, zig-zagging conveyor belt that is synonymous with the brand. Each dish is freshly prepared by highly skilled sushi chefs in front of diners. Condiments of soy sauce, wasabi and pickled ginger are readily available on the table complementing the overall eating experience.

With a service style that is speedy and efficient and offering customers the option to choose between a snack of one dish, or a more substantial meal of three or four plates, it is ideally suited to the needs of the time-pressed airport passenger. Sushi boxes that can be carried on to a flight are also available, giving passengers even more flexibility. YO! Sushi also serves a selection of Japanese beers, sake and wine.

Robin Rowland, CEO of YO! Sushi said; ‘SSP’s strong capabilities in the food travel sector makes it the ideal partner to further expand our brand in the airport market, and we are delighted to begin a relationship with the true experts in taking premier brands to the travelling consumer.’

Andrew Lynch, CEO of SSP was similarly confident that the new venture was a sound move for both partners. ‘Our research shows us that customers in Norway have become great fans of the Japanese way of preparing and serving seafood, and we know that they will enjoy the excitement and the theatre of a visit to YO! Sushi. We pride ourselves on offering our airport clients a broad and impressive spectrum of brands – including our own in-house names and bespoke concepts alongside many of the best-loved names on the high street. YO! Sushi, with its innovative menu, slick service and striking good-looks will be a popular choice in Norway, and we’re delighted to be adding it to our portfolio of brands.’

Oslo Airport’s director of business development and real estate Espen Ettre said that SSP’s ability to deliver high quality internationally renowned names was one of its key strengths. ‘In a top-class line-up, our new food and beverage facilities will feature some of the best brands in the business, including United Bakeries, Starbucks, and Le Grand Comptoir. We believe our passengers will really appreciate the YO! Sushi experience.’

YO! Sushi operates more than 56 company-owned restaurants in the UK, as well as more than 11 franchised sushi bars in Ireland, Portugal and the Middle East.
