Stockholm Central Station

Historic splendour and modern convenience

Located in the city centre, Stockholm Central Station opened in 1871 and is today the largest station in Sweden and central hub of the subway system. Seventy five million travellers pass through its doors every year.

A striking building in the Italian Renaissance style, Stockholm-Central Station’s most distinctive feature is ‘the Ringen’, a large circular opening in the centre of the ground floor, which affords views to the Underground floor below.

The station is currently undergoing a SEK 1 billion refurbishment. This major work began in April 2009 and is scheduled for completion in June 2012. Once complete over 4,500 square metres will have been added to the facility (mostly in the station’s lower hall), and a new entrance onto Stockholm’s Waterfront will be created.

SSP has operated at Stockholm-Central Station for over 15 years, and now runs a range of outlets in the Central Hall, North Hall and the City Terminal. It will re-open on the Underground level, with a Burger King and an Upper Crust, once renovation is complete, in 2012.

A culinary highlight of the station is Restaurant Stockholm, a modern venue that is popular with both travellers and the local community. Here, Chef Andreas Ostenfeld serves a range of classical dishes with a contemporary twist described by Michelin as ‘Swedish-inspired recipes featuring fresh ingredients and modern French touches’. Last year, Restaurant Stockholm trumped its 2009 Michelin two-fork triumph and was awarded a coveted three-fork listing in the 2010 Guide.

The station was also the first venue to feature Street Food, a concept SSP developed in partnership with world-renowned chef Marcus Sameulesson. Launched in autumn 2007, Street Food offers exotic foods from across the globe combined with local ingredients. The brand’s emphasis on simple presentation and quick service makes it ideal for the travel environment.

Other brands operated at the station include O’Learys, Pizza Hut, Robert’s Coffee and Upper Crust and Upper Crust.
