Iconic local stars at a stunning new terminal
The subject of a $500 million US revamp completed in the summer of 2010, Sydney Airports departure terminal now boasts a range of impressive eateries and bars. Among these is the Bambini Wine Room, which in 2007 was named Gourmet Traveller magazine’s best bar in Sydney. The Bambini Wine Room was created by husband and wife team Michael and Angela Potts. Michael’s illustrious career began at the fabled 3 Michelin star Maxim’s restaurant, when he was just 17. He later worked as Executive Chef for both the Australian and US Ambassadors in Paris, and as Catering Manager for Sheraton Hotels in Sydney.
Itacho Sushi, which made its first appearance at Hong Kong’s Kowloon Bay, is well known for its fresh, premium Japanese seafood delicacies, the menu features different seafoods according to the seasons as well as a number of local specialities. Itacho Sushi was founded in 2007 by Ricky Cheng, the owner of the most famous sushi chain in Hong Kong - Itamae Sushi. The name ‘Itacho’ refers to the highest ranking master sushi chef.
The Danks Street Depot is a highlight on the Sydney dining landscape. It received its first major accolade just months after it opened when it was named the Good Food Guide’s Best Cafe in Sydney. Six years on, it has won many more awards and countless media mentions, while in 2008, owner and executive chef Jared Ingersoll was dubbed ‘the high priest of contemporary Sydney fare’ by The Sydney Herald’s Good Food Guide. Ingersoll describes the menus he serves as ‘simple street food’, which he prepares with meticulous care and traditional techniques that he perfected whilst working in some of the finest kitchens in the world.
Trattoria Prego, inspired by the ever popular food stations in the David Jones Food Hall, offers a stylish take on the traditional charm of a rustic Italian trattoria. Patrons can to choose between deli-style food at the counter, or to dine at linen-covered tables. Finally a Caviar House & Prunier Seafood bar completes the line-up. The new units have opened as part of an AU$500 million investment to improve facilities for the 32 million passengers who use the airport each year.
Australia’s first Montreux Jazz Café opened at Sydney in May 2010.
