Hong Kong International Airport

Food service at the best of the best

SSP Hong Kong has been operating food outlets at Hong Kong International airport, (HKIA) since 1997. It now runs 29 food and beverage units at the airport encompassing 24 brands and is the clear dominant player with a market share of approximately 40%. Since 2003, sales at SSP’s outlets have increased substantially, with growth far exceeding the 27% uplift in passenger numbers.

Hong Kong International airport accommodates some 51 million passengers per year, of whom 70% are of Asian origin, with the balance being from Europe, the Americas and the South Pacific. Chinese travellers dominate, accounting for 25% of all non-local passengers, and are the fastest growing traveller segment.

The large numbers of travellers and the long average dwell time they spend at the airport creates substantial demand for a wide variety of food and beverage options, from simple local food offers to fine dining. Prestigious international brands such as Caviar House & Prunier, Panopolis bakery and Famous Famiglia are among the brands that passengers can enjoy at the Food Junction at HKIA’s West Hall.  Alongside these are a number of Asian concepts, - a local congee café, serving traditional Chinese rice dishes, an Itacho Japanese sushi bar and the well regarded Singaporean restaurant Chen Fu Ji, which is famous for its signature dish of Imperial Golden Fried Rice.

The high standard of SSP’s Hong Kong operations was recognised by Time Out magazine, which in 2010 named SSP restaurants as four of the five it selected as the best at the airport. It described Tian Xia Dumplings as, ‘an example of what other places aspire to be….These guys have the formula spot on.’
