Camden Food Co.
The tasty way to ‘Eat right’
The Camden Food Co. was launched in 2006, as part of SSP’s response to consumer’s rising awareness of the importance of leading a healthier lifestyle. SSP UK was quick to respond to this cultural movement, recognising that there was a significant lack of options to eat well on the move. Camden Food Co takes a balanced approach - providing healthy options in travel locations, alongside more indulgent treats. Clearly displayed nutritional information allows consumers to make informed choices about the food they eat.
Camden Food Co is one of the brands that has signed up to the UK government’s Responsibility Deal – the brand’s calorie labelling and the removal of artificial trans-fats comply with both pledges.
Camden Food Co’s ‘Eat Right’ ethos does not stop with food. Camden’s menu also offers Fair Trade and organic products and biodegradable, or recycled packaging is used where possible. All sandwich packaging, napkins and bags are selected to be environmentally friendly and are recycleable or biodegradable.
The brand has been designed to appeal equally to male and to female customers (who account for 53% of sales). Featuring inviting, quirky décor and colourful food displays, Camden offers a treat for all the senses, and prides itself on its down-to-earth attitude. It offers an ‘oasis’ in a hectic environment, where the freshest of food may be purchased with speed and friendly service, in a contemporary setting.
Since its launch, the brand has been extended into three formats - ‘cafes’ offer seating for passengers with time to relax while ‘grab and go’ stores and kiosks offer speedy service to the time-pressed traveller.
In May 2007, Camden was named ‘En-route Sandwich Retailer of the Year’ by the British Sandwich Association. The following year, leading food industry organisation Dewberry Redpoint gave it the Menumasters Café/QSR award, an accolade designed to recognise and reward the cream of both food and menu developers. In 2010, Product Development Manager, Hannah Saunders won the Coffee and Sandwich category at the Menu Innovation and Development Awards (MIDAS). The brand was also named ‘Best New Food and Beverage Concept’ and ‘Best Store Design’ of 2010 by leading US publication ARN.
The Camden brand continues to flourish and there are now ten outlets in the UK. Camden Food Co. can be found at London train stations Euston, St Pancras, Charing Cross, Kings Cross, Liverpool Street, Fenchurch St., Waterloo and Victoria and at Birmingham New Street and Windsor stations. There are also Camdens at Vancouver, Sacramento and Indianapolis International airports, as well as Larnaca, Cyprus.
