SSP secures major contract at Frankfurt

SSP News Release 30-May-2011

SSP has consolidated its strong position in the German market with a substantial new business win at Frankfurt Airport. The contracts, which will see the company open three new units and retain an existing coffee house, are valued at over 7.2 million euros per annum and will run from between five and eight years.

The new outlets will open as part of the development of Frankfurt’s new A Plus Pier, which is scheduled to welcome its first passengers in summer 2012. They include a number of highly regarded brands from both the Frankfurt area and other parts of Germany, as well as renowned international brands.

Italian restaurant Lucullus NERO is already a firm favourite with locals in Frankfurt. Making its airport debut, the restaurant will serve a modern interpretation of a traditional Italian menu. Dishes on offer will include classic pizzas, as well as specially created recipes including goat’s cheese with balsamic vinaigrette or ricotta, sausage and pistachio. There’s also a range of typical pasta dishes, as well as much-loved Italian staples such as saltimbocca di vitello alla Romana. A selection of snacks including focaccia and paninis will be available to take away. Crafted in sleek blacks and silvers, Lucullus NERO has been planned by leading international design company Costa Group, creators of the celebrated Eataly Italian culinary retail and dining venue in New York.

A highlight of the nightlife of Berlin, the Reingold bar evokes the glamour of the city during its 1920s heyday. With its décor of lustrous golds and sumptuous furnishings including deep-buttoned leather Chesterfield sofas, it offers a contemporary twist on the style of Burlesque. It will serve bar classics including Club sandwiches and Caesar Salads, alongside a range of international ‘tapas’ and gourmet bar snacks. Famous for its extensive selection of exotic cocktails, including Mojitos, Brazilian Caipirinhas and Martinis, Reingold also offers a range of fine wines and premium beers.

SSP will also open a second temaki bar sushi concept, building on the success of the current outlet which is part of the airport’s popular Around the World food court at

Terminal 1. temaki bar serves a range of fine hand-rolled sushi. The menu includes a generous selection of nigiri, maki, sashimi and California rolls, plus of course a range of temaki, all freshly prepared at the counter by skilled Japanese sushi chefs. With its modern and opulent design, the bar will appeal to lovers of authentic Japanese foods.

The highly successful perfect day coffee house will remain, and will be refurbished to re-open in 2013. This concept, winner of the title ‘Best Non-alcoholic Beverage Outlet’ in this year’s prestigious Moodie Report Airport Food and Beverage Awards, has been a popular feature of the airport since 2007. It serves a range of own-grown coffees from India, together with an array of snacks and sandwiches to eat in or take away.

The brand mix – a combination of franchised offers and SSP’s own names, was selected to meet the specific requirements of the airport’s passengers, identified by SSP’s bespoke consumer insights research. This detailed the sophisticated requirements of the business and leisure passenger at Frankfurt, and their desire for a high-quality dining experience.

Commenting on the deal, Cornelius Everke, managing director of SSP Germany said he was delighted to have secured the contract, which is one of the largest in the German market of the past three years. ‘Frankfurt, as one of the top three airports in Europe, is clearly a high profile location. We already have a substantial and commercially successful operation here, and we’re extremely proud to be growing that business. Our new outlets will be of a high quality, offering the very best in service, and our operations here at Frankfurt will be a flagship for our business in Europe and across the globe.’

Mark Hallstein, senior food and beverage manager of Fraport is similarly confident of the future success of the new venture. ‘Having worked with SSP for a number of years, we know that their German team can meet the high standards we expect for our customers. Their new bars and restaurants have proven appeal to consumers in Frankfurt and will help us to achieve our objective of creating an airport of individual style and character.’

The new contract will result in the creation of approximately 70 jobs.
