Gran Canaria in the forefront of Spanish airport catering

The first phase of a new range of cuisine available at the airport in Gran Canaria has just been unveiled.

Of the 18 establishments in Gran Canaria, seven were opened during the second half of 2009 including the first Starbucks establishment in the archipelago. Over 7,000 sq.m. of facilities operated by SSP at the terminal have been completely refurbished, creating more than 200 jobs on the island.

SSP operates Burger King with its new format 20/20, O'Learys Sports Bar, Caffè Ritazza, Lizarrán, Soho Coffee Co., Grill & More, Sky Bar, Great Canaria Bar, Deli's Grab & Go, Sabina, Tirma, Carlsberg, two Upper Crust stores and two Café Select. O'Learys is also due to open in restaurant format shortly.

In total the company operates 43 premises in the Canary Islands: 18 in Gran Canaria airport, 13 in Tenerife south airport (Reina Sofía), seven in Tenerife North airport (Los Rodeos), and five in Lanzarote airport. Gran Canaria had more than nine million passengers passing through in 2009, the fifth largest airport passenger volume in Spain.

Director General of SSP, Blanca Ripoll is keen to publicise their significant investment in the airport, and the commitment of the company towards economic development and tourism in the Canaries, a project awarded to them by AENA. Currently, five million euros has been invested in new facilities and improvement, offering more varied cuisine to passengers throughout Spanish airports.
