Sydney soars

The $500 million Sydney international airport renovation to upgrade aero and passenger facilities is due for completion in May 2010 and includes 2500sqm of retail floorspace.

When it is completed, the airport’s international terminal will have 120 new stores. This includes the addition of some 7000sqm of floor space, 2500sqm of retail space and some 120 new stores within the International Terminal, including 90 specialty retailers and 30 food and beverage outlets covering a full range of experiences, quality options and price points.

The changes to the international terminal departures experience have been designed with an eye to improving the traveller’s journey and, for the first time the airport will have a comprehensive luxury brand offer.

The new retail offer will also include a number of ‘firsts’ such as the largest duty free store in the southern hemisphere at 3800sqm, the first airside McDonald’s in Australia to feature an international menu as well as the first Lonely Planet, Wiggles and Apple concept stores in any airport in the world.

September saw the start of a series of openings with outlets such as Boost Juice, Subway and Waggamma joining the existing stable of pre-customs food offers, and with Danks Street Depot opening its doors in October.

The post-customs Departures precinct has seen the introduction of quality offers not previously available including Bambini Wine Bar and Seafood Bar with more outlets scheduled to open over the coming months.

If passengers can manage to pull themselves away from the range of delicious food options, there are also a number of new retail stores open and on the way offering something for all interests and budgets.

For the serial globe trotter, the new Lonely Planet concept store will while away some waiting time while the Australian souvenir or gift buyer can shop Purely Australian, Purely Merino or a new concept store, Australian Made.
